TELEMUNDO,A YEAR UNDER THE FEATHERS
A brief history:Telemundo was born in 1986 by Saul Steinberg and Henry Silverman of Reliance Capital Group L. P.,who formed TELEMUNDO GROUP INC.in 1987 they began their first newscast "Noticiero Telemundo" which was co produced by the HABC (Hispanic American Broadcasting Company) in Miami.,later that year "Deportes Telemundo" began, between 1988 ans 1991 Telemundo started to expand its station holdings, affiliates, and U.S. produced programming, like "Noticiero Telemundo/CNN a coprod of Telemundo and CNN, the 1st spanish language cooking show "Cocina Crisco", Maria Laria hosted talk show "Cara A Cara",and the tabloid news magazine "Ocurrio Asi".
Telemundo,by 1991 was producing 54% of its programming in the united states, all was going well, and then...BOOM.
In 1993 Telemundo was in financial trouble and filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy,Through a restructuring, the major shareholder was Apollo Advisors L.P.in 1994, in 1995 Rolland Hernandez became President and one of his 1st moves was opening Telemundo West Coast in the famed Raleigh Studios to attract spanish speaking talent on both east and west coast.
in 1995 50% of its programs were produced in the states at the Hialea, Fla. studios, as well as in L.A. and Puerto Rico.
When telemundo emerged from the belly of death (bankruptcy) it was under its third owner, the joint partnership of John Noalns Liberty Cable and Sony Entertainment.
But that wouold not help, for although it was making money and grabbing some viewers, one plan to bring the best of both worlds
fizzled as one show that was a fan fave on ABC TV,was remade for Telemundo, but although ratings success, "Angles" with comic Paul Rodreguiez as Charlie was cancelled as the stars were celebrating "Cinco De Mayo" on KTLAs Morning News.
And then came their first foray into morning television, with "Esta manana" but while getting decent ratings, it just couldnt break teh hold of Univisions "Despirita America",it wasnt until late 2001 when Telemundo stole two attractive and funny late night cable shopping hosts to anchor a new morning show called "De mananita" that the hold of "Despirita America" would be broken as "DM" would begin to take some audiences from Univision, but Liberty Media and Sony wanted out to concentrate on seperate ventures.
In came NBC in a move that stunned the broadcast industry, they bought Telemundo and began to reshape it into a strong competitor in the latino market.
Since then NBCs influence has been seen as a good deal for the latino viewers, from morning to night Telemundo has seen massive growth in programming, AND has even captured some major deals including live coverage of the NBA, Golden Globes, and All the beauty pageants from CBS, and the olympics! among other items.
Telemundo is fighting hard and is stronger than ever, while Univsion begins to show cracks, telemundo plans on growing bigger and stronger every day!
